DUNEDIN, Fla. - DUNEDIN, Fla. - Two canine-oriented events in city parks today will give pooches something to bark about.
"It's going to be a day for dogs in Dunedin," David White, volunteer coordinator, said.
A parade, costume contests and agility runs, all designed with dogs in mind, will highlight the Feb. 9 activities, he said.
The city recreation division kicks off today's festivities with Marti Parti For Pups, from 8 to 11 a.m., in Pioneer Park.
This street party is a take-off on the human Mardi Gras festivities held downtown last week but designed instead for man's best friend.
Each year from 300 to 600 dogs and their owners attended Marti Parti, White said, so all dogs should be on a leash during the event.
The grand costume parade of colorfully bedecked dogs, and their owners, begins at 9:30 a.m. in Pioneer Park.
There is no fee to join the line of march.
The Marti Parti parade will head up Main Street to Broadway, and then turn onto Scotland Street and make its way to the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. It will return to the park along Main Street.
The morning will include a pet and owner look-alike contest, and contests in other categories, such as the smallest, biggest and funniest-looking dog.
"It's surprising how many people look like their pets, White said.
This year there will be plenty of vendor exhibits in Pioneer Park, including one selling gourmet treats for dogs such as chicken jerky.
Food vendors will also be on hand in the park to dish up treats for humans.
On the other side of town, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., in Highlander Park, on Pinehurst Avenue, the Pinellas Animal Foundation will hold its annual Bowser Games.
The Bowser Games include various contests, Frisbee demonstrations, agility shows, K-9 displays and a food court for humans.
