SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - Youngsters and the young at heart who like the loud sounds and odd smells of the big rigs can Touch A Truck today at Safety Harbor City Park.

The 10-year-old event, which attracts hundreds of spectators, will take place from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at City Park, 940 Seventh St. S.

About 35 trucks will be showcased during the 2008 Touch A Truck.

Event-goers will have a chance to not only touch some big trucks, but also climb inside their cabins and maybe even operate some of the vehicles, Joe Cooper, city special events coordinator, said.

"Kids really like seeing the big trucks," he said.

Vehicle operators will be available to answer questions, explain what the trucks are used for and what makes them special.

The Safety Harbor Public Works and Fire departments, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and Bayflite are among the many organizations expected to be represented at Touch A Truck.

The event is a big favorite with Public Works Department personnel because they get to show off all the equipment they use, Cooper said. The equipment includes a recycling truck and a rig with television camera that peers inside water and sewer pipes in search of breaks or obstructions.

It's a fun and educational experience, Cooper said of Touch A Truck.
