Tarpon Springs Kicking Off Arbor Programs

TARPON SPRINGS - The city will inaugurate next week two programs designed to add to the city's tree canopy.

At 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, the programs will get under way with elected officials planting a red maple and a golden rain tree in front of City Hall.

The plantings are designed to let people know about two city-initiated programs, dubbed Adopt-A-Tree and Gift Tree.

Interim City Manager Mark LeCouris said these twin tree programs are an effort to beautify the city by adding to its shade canopy and replacing ugly concrete with attractive greenery.

In addition, the programs, give residents an opportunity to participate in making the city a more beautiful place, he said.

In time, the beautification effort will pay dividends by attracting residents and business to the city, fostering economic development, according to LeCouris.

The Gift Tree Program enables groups or individuals to commemorate special events or create memorials to loved ones by donating funds to purchase a tree.

A $750 donation will cover the purchase, planting and maintenance of one tree. The tree would be planted on city property, such as along trails or rights of way or in parks.

The names of those honored with a Gift Tree donation will be inscribed in a leather-bound register that will be on display in the City Clerk's Office.

Adopt-A-Tree was also created to help replenish the city's tree canopy. Funded by the Tarpon Springs Tree Bank, Adopt-A-Tree makes native trees available to people for planting along public rights of way or in parks.

The person who adopts the tree is responsible for its planting and maintenance. The city will purchase the containerized trees in bulk to reduce costs.

The trees, however, will not be available until spring 2009.

People interested in participating in the tree programs should call the city's Development Services Department at 727-942-5608.
