Fans of the local art scene still have one more week to catch the latest creative endeavors of area artists.

Artwork from the annual juried art show by members of the Tarpon Springs Art Association is on display at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center through Saturday, Dec. 27.

"The consistency of their work is incredible," said Lynn Whitelaw, director of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, in Tarpon Springs. Whitelaw was the judge of the art show.

Steve Tagg received best of show award for his fused glass work. Tagg layers powdered or ground colored glass to achieve both the color and texture he wants. Some of his work can call for as many as a dozen 10-hour firings in a kiln. The result is subtly colored, touchable art.

Whitelaw recognized Tagg for his highly individualistic medium. "The Best of Show won because of the technique and artistic expression," she explained.

Whitelaw was also impressed by the high quality of watercolors. Jane Walker won in that category for her still life. Walker, Whitelaw noted, commands "control over watercolor."

According to the show's organizer, Barbara Thompson, the show has 63 entries from both amateur and professional artists. Most of the artists are from Pinellas and Pasco counties.

Categories are oil and acrylic not under glass, colored pencils and pen and ink, photography, mixed media, water media and three-dimensional.

Thompson has watched the artists evolve over the years. "I've watched some of these people grow from being amateurs to amazing."
