OZONA - Before local artist Garry Dodds travels to Africa and the Middle East to help refugees in that part of the world, he plans to help local homeless people with the help of fellow artist and musician Tanya Orme.
Dodds, who is from Safety Harbor, and the Ozona-based Orme wanted to give something back to the community. They will present an exhibition of their art, today, Saturday, at Ozona Village Hall. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Homeless Emergency Project.
The Homeless Emergency Project is a community outreach program of the Clearwater church Everybody's Tabernacle.
Dodds and Orme recently worked on a Homeless Emergency Project fundraiser in Dunedin. They decided afterward to hold an art show and give 25 percent of the proceeds to the Homeless Emergency Project.
Historic Ozona Village Hall seemed like the perfect venue for their exhibition, called "Lullabies." About 20 of their works will be on display.
The show will take place 5 - 10 p.m., Dec. 20, at Ozona Village Hall, 341 Bay St., north of Orange Street. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be available.
Representatives of the 40-year-old Homeless Emergency Project will be at the show to answer questions about their mission.
The artists are asking people who attend the exhibition to donate $1.
Mary Orme, Tanya's mother, said her daughter has traveled extensively throughout the world in her 23 years.
She has real empathy for people, especially the less fortunate.
The works of Tanya Orme, a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University, often feature nautical themes and images in vibrant colors.
She recently traveled the seas as a crewmember of St. Petersburg-based replica tall ship of HMS Bounty.
Orme, who also expresses herself as a musician, hopes to serve on another sea-going vessel before entering graduate school.
Nautical images are one part of her new series of paintings, she said.
Her artistic creations describe emotions and images that cannot be said.
"My art focus on where I am standing now and where I have been. My life is so rich and I want to share that," she said.
Pieces by Dodds spotlight the humanitarian crisis around the world. He graduated from the University of North Florida, where he studies social work and art.
Next month Dodds begins doing aid work in the Middle East and Africa. Helping those in need comes before art, he said.
