ST. PETERSBURG - An off-duty firefighter saved a fast-food customer's life Saturday morning by performing the Heimlich maneuver.

According to St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue, Donald Burlock, 64, was eating lunch with his four grandchildren at Chick-fil-A, 2471 Tyrone Blvd., when he started choking and couldn't breathe.

Firefighter-EMT Glen Hadley was eating a few tables away with his wife and daughter and heard the commotion, according to a report. After confirming that Burlock could not breathe, he began the Heimlich maneuver. After several attempts, a chunk of a chicken sandwich was dislodged.

"Glen was a real hero today, as this could have had a tragic ending," said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Firefighter/Paramedic Tom Kras.
