It is the next generation's chance to shine.
The Painted Fish Gallery in Dunedin is now exhibiting the work of three artists in their 30s. "Fresh Fish II" marks the gallery's second year of featuring an exhibit highlighting young artists.
The show has a special meaning for fans of the downtown Dunedin gallery. It features the work of Christine Renc-Carter, the daughter of Painted Fish owners Linda and Bill Renc. Renc-Carter is the registrar and exhibitions coordinator for the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, in Largo.
Renc-Carter's pieces are mixed media drawings and monoprints. Both have the common element of symbolism Renc-Carter favors.
"I use iconic imagery," she explained, noting she often uses birds. They are frequently trying to put out fires in her work, she said, but recently those benevolent birds have become more menacing. She is looking forward to seeing how they evolve, she noted.
Carter-Renc and Simon Boses, a ceramic sculptor whose work is also featured in the exhibit, were classmates at Gibbs High School, an arts-focused magnet school in St. Petersburg, and later found themselves both attending the Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore.
Boses' work draws on the unlikely combination of cartoons and African and South American native sculpture. Both cartoons and the sculpture have simple, stylized lines, he noted.
The third member of the group, Noah Deledda, a graphic designer and graffiti artist turned oil painter, incorporates drawing and realism into his work.
