TARPON SPRINGS - The City Commission will be asked Tuesday to decide whether the city should impose additional fees on recreational activities and event organizers.
At the Aug. 26 meeting, delayed one week by Tropical Storm Fay, commissioners will also decide whether to go along with interim City Manager Mark LeCouris' staff reorganization plan.
Because of the storm disruption, a report on Fire Department staffing originally planned for the Aug. 26 meeting will now be presented Sept. 2.
Tuesday night commissioners will consider asking sports leagues to help pay a portion of the cost of lighting fields during their games. Commissioners will also decide whether to charge a rental fee to nonprofit groups that hold meetings in city buildings.
Another proposal would charge groups a rental fee for use of city park facilities. In addition, the organizers of an event with admission fees would have to share 25 percent of their gate receipts with the city.
Under a proposal recommended by the recreation division, residents and nonresidents would have to acquire city recreation cards before being allowed to use municipal athletic facilities. Residents would pay $5, nonresidents $15.
Interim City Manager Mark LeCouris will also propose restructuring some city staff. One proposal would give Planning Director Renae Vincent additional responsibility to focus on economic development and community redevelopment.
Read additional information about fees proposed by the Tarpon Springs Recreation Department and staff restructuring in the Aug. 23 North Pinellas print edition of The Suncoast News.
