Art For Animals

TARPON SPRINGS - The Suncoast Animal League will hold a concert and art auction fundraiser at The Zone, 121 E. Tarpon Ave. 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24.

The fundraiser will help defray the cost of rising medical expenses incurred by The Suncoast Animal League's rescuing of 121 dogs from an alleged puppy mill.

A concert features world music presented by the group Gypsy Star, a co-sponsor of the event. Artwork offered at auction is all donated by local artists, dealers and collectors.

The Zone has a dog friendly outside patio behind its Tarpon Avenue location.

Ordinance passes

DUNEDIN - Outdoor amplified music will only be permitted to be played in Dunedin until 11 p.m. on any night of the week, according to revisions to a city ordinance recently adopted by the City Commission.

Live musical concerts can go longer if played indoors.

Under the revision that could be adopted at the second and final hearing, scheduled 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Dunedin City Hall, outdoor amplified music will be considered offensive if it exceeds 65 decibels. Authorities will measure the offending sound at the property line of the complainant.

A year of noise task force meetings resulted in staff drafting the ordinance, after residents and owners of pubs playing music bickered about decibel levels and when music could be played.

The only thing both sides agreed on was that each restaurant would have their own decibel meter and monitor their own music.

Assistant City Manager Harry Gross said the ordinance also makes it illegal to produce amplified sounds that "otherwise creates a nuisance." This would allow authorities to place restrictions on those who play boom boxes to loud or create other nuisances in parks or other places.

Seasonal trolley eyed

TARPON SPRINGS - The Tarpon Springs Trolley may soon only be operated during the peak tourist season. While no revised schedule has been devised, trolley rides would not be available in summer from at least May to September.

Restricting trolley use might be a good way reduce operational costs and extend its usefulness, some city commissioners said.

Commissioner Peter Dalacos said he would still like the city to consider asking the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority permission to raise the fare, so riders pay more of the cost. He also suggested the route of the trolley be expanded to take riders to Fred Howard Park and Sunset Beach.

Boards vacancies

TARPON SPRINGS - Those who want to make a name for themselves in the annuals of city government can now find a plethora of city boards and committees on which to serve.

The Board of Adjustment and Appeals and Code Enforcement Board each have three vacancies to fill.

The Library Advisory Board has one open position, with Parks and Recreation's Advisory Board needing two more members.

The Heritage Preservation Board and Public Art Committee both have one open seat.

The Civil Service Board is looking for three more members and Tarpon Springs Housing Authority two additional commissioners.

City residents can obtain an application from the Tarpon Springs City Clerk's Office, on Ring Avenue, or downloaded it from the city Web site, www.ci.tarpon-springs.fl.us>, under "City Clerk, Boards and Committees."
