PALM HARBOR - An even more eclectic variety of art will be on display this winter during the 34th Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce Fine Arts and Fine Crafts Show.
Chamber President Connie Davis said the chamber is happy to return the art show to downtown Florida Avenue after its 3-year stint on the Tarpon Springs Campus of St. Petersburg College.
Downtown, however, cannot accommodate as many artists. So this year the number of participants in the juried show will have to be whittled down. About 115 artists will be chosen to display their creations Dec. 6 and 7. Last year's show had upward of 140.
There is just not enough room on Florida Avenue to accommodate as many artist booths stretched in two rows, Davis said. Even 11th Street will be utilized. Harbor Hall, on nearby Georgia Avenue, however, cannot be used because of a wedding being held at the Georgia Avenue site.
Artists hoping to display their work should call the chamber as soon as possible to be considered for the juried show, Davis said.
The good news is hundreds more spectators are expected to attend the show on Florida Avenue, compared to the college location.
The show was moved to SPC Tarpon Campus during the now-completed Florida Avenue streetscaping project. During that time the participating artists clamored for its return to the more quaint setting of the historic downtown district.
Chamber organizers, on the other hand, liked the sprawling SPC campus overlooking Klosterman Road. Another plus, they say, is the on-campus Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art and its 6,000 pieces of 20th century art.
Logistics at the college, however, proved to be a problem. Artists found it difficult to carry their showcases and artwork up and down the hilly terrain of the 80-acre campus. When the show was moved to the parking area at the college, artists and patrons were forced to endure the rays of the unshaded sun and heat from the asphalt.
Logistics are still being worked out for this year's show, Davis said. One thing is certain, however, it will continue to live up to its reputation of being a top venue for fine artists, she said.
