DUNEDIN - A monument to local war casualties in the city's newest park was dedicated Thursday morning.
City officials, local business leaders, U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Pinellas Park, and veterans gathered in Purple Heart Park, at the corner of Main Street and Alt. 19, to dedicate the municipal Purple Heart monument.
City officials agreed to erect the monument as part of Dunedin's successful effort to be named the nation's first Purple Heart City. The designation was bestowed by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a national veterans group.
Danny Sowder, a Dunedin resident and a member of the Clearwater chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, urged the city to seek the Purple Heart City designation. Sowder attended today's monument dedication.
