TARPON SPRINGS - City commissioners have put on hold plans to conduct a nationwide search for a city manager – until at least January.
The decision was made Tuesday night, a day after the City Commission interviewed representatives from three executive search firms during a work session.
Late Tuesday night commissioners voted 3-2 to give veteran Police Chief Mark LeCouris six months to prove he should be city manager.
LeCouris has served as interim city manager since the May departure of former City Manager Ellen Posivach. Posivach, who held the post for nine years, had fallen out of favor with commissioners.
During his tryout as manager, LeCouris will continue as police chief. This has prompted some people to jokingly dubb LeCouris "chief interim manager." Two police captains are handling the daily operations of the Police Department and report to LeCouris.
Mayor Beverley Billiris and Commissioner Robin Saenger voted against suspending the city manager search. They both said LeCouris was doing an admirable job as interim manager, but the city should check to see who else was out there.
