TARPON SPRINGS -- An artist with local ties and fancied as a world traveler is the focus of an exhibit opening Aug. 5 at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center. The exhibit titled, "Harriet Muller Collection: Tribute to an Unpublished Artist."

This will be the first public exhibit by the late Harriet Muller, who was a resident of the Tarpon Springs area from 1972 through the 1980's.

During her colorful life Muller would find inspiration from her surroundings. Dubbed a "doodler with chalk" early in life, she possessed a creative and somewhat mischievous personality.

With a strong sense of imagery Muller employed several media, including pencil, chalk, pastels and oils. She attended New York City's Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

A native of Pennsylvania who for a time lived in Alaska, she traveled to exotic places such as Spain, Bangkok, Morocco and Honduras, which enriched her work.

Muller's attention to detail and the ability to transcend genres offers an array of renderings of still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, including the Sponge Docks.

Muller favored the works of painters Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Her works, taken from a distance as a whole, reflect the style of these Impressionists.

Later in life, Muller reflected on her life by capturing these images of a rich life, including old newspaper clippings she kept of Mother Nature, as well as capturing images she photographed during her travels.

Muller began experiencing the affects of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 89 and died at 94.

Her bright, humorous spirit remained until then.
