CLEARWATER - The wife of the Largo city manager fired after his sex change plans became public now wants a divorce.
Donna Stanton filed for divorce in February, about a year after her husband revealed his plans to become a woman. The news made national headlines and led the Largo City Commission to fire him from the top administrative post, which he held for 14 years.
Steve Stanton, 49, now is living as a woman named Susan while preparing for a sex-change operation this spring.
Both sides say the split was expected and negotiations are amicable. They have been married 17 years.
In her petition, Donna Stanton seeks child support and alimony and an equitable distribution of marital assets. She asks the court to name her the primary parent but wants both sides awarded shared parental responsibility for their 14-year-old son, Travis.
Donna Stanton also seeks possession of the marital home in Clearwater and wants her husband to pay her attorney fees and costs.
In a letter to the court, Stanton accepted the petition for divorce and states, "I neither admit nor deny the allegations of the petition."
Since being fired, Stanton has applied for more than 100 positions in city management and interviewed for top jobs in several cities, including Sarasota. Stanton also has engaged in public speaking, bringing attention to the issue of transgendered people.
Stanton, who now lives in Sarasota, could not be reached immediately for comment.
