TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - A play now running at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center promises to tickle both the brain and funny bone.

The center has opened its community theater season with "Whodunit," a play by Anthony Shaffer that spoofs the classic English murder mystery. It keeps the audience guessing but also laughing.

In typical murder mystery fashion, the plot concerns six guests at an English country manor. When one of them is murdered, both audience and a Scotland Yard detective put clues together to solve the mystery.

"It's full of surprises throughout," said the play's director, Abbott Morgan.

But all is not serious in this mystery. "If they don't laugh, we're not doing our job," he said.

"Whodunit" is not as well known as Shaffer's other plays "Sleuth" and "Murderer."

Sue and David Fern, two newcomers who had never acted before, won parts because of their British accents. Now, Morgan gives them kudos for their acting as well.

Another Englishman, Steve Leech, also has a part in the play.

Morgan praises set designer James Demetrius for his set. "It's something like you see on Broadway."

With his wife Marjorie, Morgan, a former high school English and drama teacher in Watkins Glen, N.Y, was one of the founders of West Coast Players after he retired and moved to Florida.

This is the fourth play he has directed with the Performing Arts Center. He has also directed for West Coast Players and Francis Wilson Playhouse.

The play is tonight, Saturday, 8 p.m., and tomorrow, Sunday, 2 p.m.

The Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center is inside City Hall, on Pine Street, between Ring and Gross avenues.

Tickets are $20, and $18 for members and students.
