OLDSMAR, Fla. - OLDSMAR, Fla. - The local civic club is contributing part of an eminent domain settlement to an $8,000 endowment fund that will send one graduating senior this year to college.
Details are still being worked out, club member Jim Campoli told City Council this week.
The student selection, however, will be made by Oldsmar Civic Club members from a list of names to be supplied by the Pinellas County School District.
Half of the endowment amount will come from the school district as matching funds.
Oldsmar Civic Club once owned the property on St. Petersburg Drive where construction of a new 20,000-square-foot Oldsmar Public Library building is nearing completion.
The city obtained that property through eminent domain and the club received a $200,000 settlement. It is the interest from this settlement that will be used for the endowment, Campoli said.
Council members welcomed the gesture.
"I think that's great. We should applaud it," Mayor Jim Ronecker said.
