EAST LAKE, Fla. - EAST LAKE, Fla. - Firefighters and office staff at East Lake Fire Rescue Station 57 are expecting to move into their new building on Tarpon Lake Boulevard by early December.
Completion date has been delayed by several weeks. It has been moved forward to Nov. 23, Fire Chief Jeff Malzone told the East Lake Fire Commission Tuesday.
"We've had some small bumps in some areas with insulation and design problems which they're going to fix," he said of the contractors Peter Brown Construction Inc. And although they have had to dip into their contingency funds, the money is being well spent overall, Malzone assured.
Construction workers are now adding the paint and finishes to the new building. They're putting in ceiling grids, tiling the floors and next week they'll be installing cabinets.
The old fire station was built in 1978 to house the first volunteer fire company serving the area.
In February 2006, the Fire Commission approved design plans for the new station. Work on the $3.6 million construction started months later.
When completed, the new building will house Squad 57 crew, the district chief, administrative offices and a public meeting room that can seat 50 persons. The adjacent old building will be demolished soon after.
At Tuesday's meeting fire commissioners also welcomed and administered the oath of office to two new firefighter-paramedics, Chris Herzog and Kenny Kovac.
Malzone said a committee is reviewing the format whereby a Santa Truck makes annual visits to hand out gifts to kids in their homes. He said each year's visit to more than 70 homes in 15 days, creates a strain on staff.
"We're thinking of an alternative plan – using the high school or library and setting up there and let them come to us instead," he said.
In the meantime sign-up for this year has been scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 29, at the YMCA of North Pinellas, 4550 Village Center Drive, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
