Tarpon Chamber to Polish Its Image

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Art Georgiou, the incoming chairman of the Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce, says one of his immediate goals will be to work with staff on rebuilding the business-boosting group's image.

Georgiou will take over as chairman, replacing Bill Harton, at the annual installation dinner, October 5 at the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club.

In the last couple of years the agency has been hit by a wave of negative media publicity arising from civil suits against the chamber and administrative errors of the past.

"We've got so much on our plate right now and we're trying to do everything right," he said.

Directors last week appointed the chamber's business assistance specialist, Sue Thomas, as interim president. She will fill the vacancy left by former President Theajo "Tj" Davis, who resigned two weeks ago.

Georgiou said Thomas's knowledge and relationship with the business community made her "a good fit for the temporary position."

The chamber is also trying to fill eight other openings on the board resulting from resignations and term expirations. Chamber officials have circulated a notice among partners asking for nominations.

In the meantime, it may take another four months before the board identifies a permanent president, Georgiou said.

Chamber bylaws dictate that before a president can be appointed, the board must first advertise the position, then appoint a hiring committee from among the directors and general membership to interview the applicants and make a selection.
