SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - Like gladiators of old, having endurance will be the key to success for participants in the third annual Rotary Club of Safety Harbor multisport event this fall.
A triathlon and 5K race have been added to this year's meets, which includes a duathlon, held at the Safety Harbor Spa, the City Marina and around town on Saturday Dec. 8, said Assistant City Manager Matthew Spoor.
A duathlon features athletes participating in a run, then biking and take on another run for the final leg of the race, while a triathlon has competition in swimming, bicycling and running.
The triathlon and duathlon will be sanctioned races.
The triathlon course offers athletes a quarter-mile swim, 11-mile bike race, followed by a 5K run.
The swim begins with a splash into Tampa Bay at the Safety Harbor Spa. The swimming course will be to the Safety Harbor Fishing Pier and then west down the boat channel.
The swimmers will return to shore at the fishing pier and its off to the bike area at the City Marina.
There, the athletes will mount bicycles and race west toward Phillippe Parkway onto Main Street to McMullen Booth Road. The course stretches along McMullen Booth Road and onto S.R. 580, turning east over the Oldsmar bridge.
Everyone turns around and proceeds back to the Safety Harbor City Marina.
Participants then run the final leg of the race with a 5K dash from the marina west toward Phillipe Parkway, this time turning south to Cooper's Bayou Park and returning back to the marina.
The duathlon features a 5K run, followed by an 11-mile bike ride and 1-mile run.
The first portion of the run starts in the parking lot of the Safety Harbor Marina. Runners will proceed south along Phillipe Parkway to Cooper's Bayou Park and back to the marina for the bicycling portion of the race.
Bicyclists will follow the triathlon course and return to the marina for a second run that takes then onto Phillipe Parkway north to Bayshore Drive, where they turn around and return to the marina.
The 5K race will start at the same time as the duathlon. Participants will dash south on Phillippe Parkway to Cooper's Bayou Park and return to the boat dock area.
During a recent City Commission meeting, where rental fees for the Marina and Main Street were waived, Mayor Andy Steingold asked the club to provide liability insurance. He said he wanted to make sure the city was covered if a bicyclist wipes out on one the new bricked intersections or a city street.
Rotary president Rory O'Connor said the club would provide the requested insurance.
Joe Cooper, city special events coordinator said, "This is a positive, lifestyle-oriented event to hold in Safety Harbor."
About 500 athletes are expected to participate.
Those who register as early as possible will save on the cost to enter:
Athletes who register by Oct. 5 pay $55 to race in the triathlon, $45 for the duathlon and $15 for the 5K race.
The cost is $5 more for those who register from Oct. 6 to Nov. 5 and another $5 for those who decide from Nov. 6 to Dec. 6.
Athletes who procrastinate until race day will pay $20 more than the October deadline to register.
