Is there something in the water in Safety Harbor? The city on Upper Tampa Bay had for years been a relative sanctuary of low-key governance. Over the last year or so, however, things have gotten a bit, well, unstable.
Last year, Mayor Pam Corbino and Commissioner Kara Bauer stepped down from office and City Manager Wayne Logan resigned as well. Bauer left because her husband got a job in Texas, but the exits of Corbino and Logan were under less than ideal circumstances.
So far this year, Logan's replacement as city manager, Billy Beckett, has resigned, and Commissioner James McCormick is stepping down after completing less than a full term in office. Beckett said he is leaving because he didn't feel he had the full support of the City Commission. Like Bauer, McCormick is leaving the city – although he's only going to Pasco County, not Texas.
The City Commission is taking a cautious approach to replacing Beckett. They are naming Assistant City Manager Matthew Spoor acting manager and giving him a six-month trial in the post.
We hope everyone else at City Hall hangs around for next half-year – at least – as well.
