The Dunedin City Commission, on a 3-2 vote, decided to move forward with a referendum in the March 2008 municipal election on changing the way commissioners are elected. As we've stated in the past, we don't get it.
The main argument for the change is having commission candidates run in districts will attract more candidates. The present system – we won't bore you with the details – scares away would-be challengers because they might have to face a pair of commission incumbents, change proponents argue.
Just a thought: Does Dunedin really want commissioners scared of challenging more than one incumbent? After all, it's not like you need to raise millions in campaign donations to run for the City Commission.
