TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - In August last year, a few staff members of the Tarpon Springs Fire Department temporarily assumed the role of construction workers and set about renovating the 30-year-old Station 70.

The remodeling work at the fire station on Gulf Road is completed and the city is inviting the public to tour the building, among several activities planned for today's Open House and Fun Day.

The eight-month project involved: repairs to a roof leak that went undetected for years; rebuilding or treating areas of severe damages from termites, mold and mildew; and reinforcing the building to make it better able to withstand hurricane force winds.

Most of the work was done by city employees, according to Donald Sayre, division chief of operations, fire training and EMS.

The majority of work, Sayre jokingly noted, was carried out by "3-H Construction," Lt. Bill Hugg, Paramedic Cal Howard and Firefighter Alex Himonetos.

The overall cost of repairs was $160,000, a savings of approximately $240,000 had the city used outside contractors.

Today's Open House and Fun Day kicks off Fire Prevention Month. At the station there will be demonstrations, games, giveaways and free refreshments.

Firefighters will conduct free and discounted checks of fire extinguishers and other equipment. Throughout the month they will visit homes door-to-door, to test smoke detectors and replace batteries or the smoke detector, if necessary, at no charge.

The schedule of their visits follows:

• Oct. 13 – Trentwood Manor and the Harrison Park area.

• Oct. 20 – Leisure Lake Mobile Home Park and Waccassa, Banana, Bath, Lim, Boyer and Pineapple streets.

• Oct. 27 – Sun Valley Mobile Home Park, Stonehedge Mobile Home Park and Seascape Condominiums.

Fire Chief Steve Moreno wants "all Tarpon Springs to stop by the station, learn life-saving tips and enjoy a hot dog!"

Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
