PALM HARBOR, Fla. - PALM HARBOR, Fla. - A party for the palate that has become a downtown tradition here kicks off tomorrow at noon.

The 11th Taste of Palm Harbor, the community's biggest signature event, will be tomorrow, Oct. 7, from noon to 6 p.m.

During this year's festival hours, Florida Avenue, the main downtown street, will be closed to traffic from Alt. 19 to C.R. 1.

This year the Palm Harbor Junior Women's Club is joining Old Palm Harbor Main Street, the group of local merchants and property owners that oversees the downtown district, to produce the food festival, said Chaz Foy, event chairwoman.

Proceeds from the Taste raise funds for the Junior Women's Club's Making A Difference Community Grants program, which provides gifts to local nonprofit organizations.

The Taste of Palm Harbor blends dishes from several area restaurants together with artists, crafters and musicians for an afternoon of fun.

Restaurants vie for Best of the Taste Award.

At this year's taste about 20 local area restaurants and specialty food businesses will serve some of their best dishes, Foy said.

The Taste of Palm Harbor gives everyone a chance to sample a variety of treats from main dishes to appetizers and desserts. It is a good way for these restaurants to promote themselves to a crowd of 20,000, Foy said.

The show will also feature the artwork and crafts of about 70 vendors, with musical entertainment provided by Paris and the Birds of Paradise Band.

There will also be rides and games for youngsters, including inflatables and a 40-foot-tall bungee trampoline.

The Taste of Palm Harbor traditionally is held on Sundays because that is the best day for smaller area restaurants to spare staff to work at the event, Foy said.

Foy, however, had hoped the Taste of Palm Harbor could have been expanded to two days, Saturday and Sunday, for this year's edition. Now, she said, she hoped that can be arranged for 2008.

Other activities that might be added to the expanded schedule are a race and a larger music festival.
