TARPON SPRINGS — The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Education Foundation gave scholarships and an excellence award to three culinary arts students of Tarpon Springs High School.

The honors were presented at the foundation's Florida's Salute to Excellence Awards Luncheon in Orlando Sept. 8.

The students were recommended by their teachers Chef Jason Ranze and Chef Robert Wright.

Tarpon Springs Senior Carol Ann Millergren received a $5,000 Mary J. Brogan Hospitality Scholarship, coupled with a matching tuition grant to further her studies at either the Johnson and Wales University - College of Culinary Arts or the Orlando Culinary Academy.

The Mary J. Brogan scholarship is usually given to an all-rounder. Chef Ranze submitted an essay on Millergren's background, including her transcripts showing a 3.9 GPA, her work in the industry and involvement in community service and extra curriculums.

Jason Isaacs, another Tarpon senior received one of 14 Hospitality Scholarships, worth $2,000, and a ProStart Hospitality Excellence Award went to his classmate Robert Clark.

The FRLA Education Foundation created the ProStart program 12 years ago to encourage more high school students to pursue careers in the food service industry that was seeing a decline in workers. ProStart is now in 190 schools across the nation.

At the luncheon, the foundation also recognized Tarpon Springs philanthropist Carol Martin for invaluable community service and her contribution to the ProStart program at the high school.

Martin's Elmar Foundation contributed more than $20,000 in scholarships to ProStart students and more than a year ago gave $2 million towards building a new state-of-the-art culinary facility, the Jacobson Arts Academy, at Tarpon Springs High School. It opened in 2006-2007 school year.

Its students are prepared to continue their education in college or enter the culinary and hospitality industry. The academy is an industry-based program that prepares students for careers in the restaurant and food service industry.

The foundation gave Martin its Pineapple Award for being the ProStart Industry Participant of the Year.
