The purchase of the Weaver property in Dunedin has too many negatives. I must admit wholeheartedly, this is not a very good move.
First and foremost, $18 million is a mind-boggling price. Can you imagine the present problems our city faces that can be solved by this fantastic amount of money?
And, then there are safety issues because of the busy Alt. 19. Can you imagine a mother looking to spend a few hours by the waterfront, having to lug chairs, umbrellas and her children across this busy highway?
And lastly, the horrible and consistent odor that pierces one's nostrils from the adjacent Dunedin waste-water plant, a problem that shall never go away.
My strongest point is there really is no need for additional parkland and, therefore, I do not see any justification for making a purchase of this magnitude.
I really believe taxpayer money from state and city can be spent in a more prudent manner, such as necessary state and city services.
