TARPON SPRINGS — Each year students of All Saints Christian School, 1700 Keystone Road, bring their pets in for blessing, after the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th century patron saint of animals.
This year, the school is opening up the opportunity to the general public.
Jessica Trudnak, program coordinator is making this 'Blessing of the Animals' into a large community event and a fundraiser for the Suncoast Animal League that opened up a year ago in Palm Harbor.
Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, Father Frank Creamer, who will be performing the blessing wants also to make it a fundraiser for the church and the school, and to bring awareness to the community about animals, Trudnak says.
"We're excited about opening this to the public," he said. "It will be a great blessing for the whole community."
Many Episcopalian churches worldwide observe St. Francis of Assisi on October 4. However Trudnak has scheduled the event at the school for October 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In between, around 11 a.m., there will be a 20-minute Mass for pet owners who wish to participate.
Suncoast Animal League representatives will be present during the day to provide microchipping for cats and dogs at $15 each.
And the church's men's group will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for sale.
There will also be games and crafts for the kids, and raffles.
"We want to make it a fun family picnic event," Trudnak says.
A $5 donation for each pet participating in the blessing will be accepted. Persons unable to bring their animals may just bring a photograph. All animals must be on a leash.
