TARPON SPRINGS , Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS , Fla. - This holiday season local Elks hope not to turn away any hungry families from receiving one of their Thanksgiving or Christmas food baskets.
Last year the lodge was able to collect enough food for 25 Thanksgiving baskets and 22 Christmas baskets. At the time, however, the need was greater, said John Farrar, lodge president.
This year the club hopes to distribute at least 35 baskets for each holiday, Farrar said. Each year the number of needy families unable to make ends meet seems to grow, he said.
Needy families, who could use a holiday meal, are referred by the police and fire departments, as well as Elks.
Disadvantaged families get a holiday food basket along with canned items and dry goods they can use for nonholiday meals.
The club, which has members from around North Pinellas, is appealing to the area public because donations of money, nonperishable foods and turkeys have started off slow this year, Farrar said. Grocery store gift certificates and turkey coupons can also be donated to the lodge, he said.
You do not have to be a member of the Lodge to drop off donations of money or food at the Lodge, 237 S. Pinellas Ave., Monday to Thursday, 3 - 11 p.m., and Friday through Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.
