DUNEDIN, Fla. - DUNEDIN, Fla. - A waterfront home should not look like a mass produced hotel room or rental condo.
That's the advice Lisa Lalaounis, an interior designer who gives homeowners who want that classy, seaside chic, waterfront appearance.
Lalaounis recently opened the shop Coastal Cabana on Broadway.
Lalaounis, who has designed the interiors of upscale homes for area developers and clients, said she opened a retail shop in Dunedin after decorators and friends began asking her for specialty items.
"Waterfront homeowners are looking for furniture and home accents that are unique and stylish, seaside chic," she said.
Many of the items in her shop, especially the specially adorned furniture and mirrors, are one of a kind. Her furniture items can be transformed to match a home's design decor and color, Lalaounis said.
Large furniture pieces have been moving especially well since the shop opened, she said.
Her shop also features home accents inspired by the sea such as starfish and shells. Several of the items are encrusted with nautical ropes, shells and stones.
Rather than setting up shop on Clearwater Beach with its transient tourist population, she chose Dunedin's downtown because of its old-fashioned downtown charm, Lalaounis said.
She fell in love with her Broadway shop the first time she saw it, with its large windows that let the sun in and its fine view.
"Where else can you look out the window and see an egret walking by?" she asked.
People are learning there is more to downtown Dunedin than just Main Street, she said.
