TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - - Elian Glenn started work a little earlier than expected on Dec. 19. And like they say in the movies, this time it was personal.
At 12:17 p.m., Tarpon Springs police officers responded to a call of burglary in progress, shots fired, at a home near Meres Boulevard and Carlton Road.
As it turned out, the home belonged to Glenn, an officer with the Clearwater Police Department.
Glenn was getting ready for work a short time earlier, and hadn't answered when there was a knock on his front door. Moments later, he heard someone forcing his way in through a side door. Apparently, the would-be burglar didn't think anyone was home, particularly an armed police officer.
According to Tarpon Springs police, Glenn fired shots at the intruder, who ran out. Glenn chased after him and saw the man get into a waiting car, which Glenn also fired at.
Glenn got a good look at the suspect, a Black male in his 20's, between 5-feet, 11-inches and 6-feet, one-inch tall, medium build, with very short hair and a light mustache, wearing blue jeans with gray boxers and a black hooded sweatshirt.
The car he got away in was a red or maroon late model four-door with dark tinted windows, possibly a Toyota Camry, Mercury Milan or Nissan Altima. The car may now have bullet holes in its rear.
While investigating that incident, Tarpon Springs detectives learned that another house just a few doors down had also been burglarized, and all of the family's Christmas gifts had been stolen.
A fingerprint was lifted from the interior of that home and run through he Automated Fingerprint Identification System. It came back as belonging to 21-year-old Quentin Y. Washington.
Washington, who fits the description given by Glenn, is a suspect in both residential burglaries, police say.
Washington has outstanding warrants on charges of violation of probation and grand theft out of Sumter County, a traffic violation warrant from Hillsborough County and now has a burglary warrant out of Tarpon Springs.
Anyone who sees Washington or knows his whereabouts can call Crimestoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS or submit a tip online to its Web site.
