CLEARWATER - CLEARWATER - Palm Harbor University High (3-8) entered Friday's Brighthouse Shootout on a 1-5 skid, hoping their young lineup could pick up some out-of-district confidence over the holiday.
If nothing else, the Hurricanes did just that as they handedly beat Hillsborough County's Alonso High 65-52.
Aggressive sophomore point guard Kevin McKellar led the way for Palm Harbor, scoring 20 points.
McKellar also played a key role for the Hurricanes in consistently breaking down Alonso's attempted full- and half-court press sets.
"He's kind of the engine that gets us going," Palm Harbor head coach Mike Walters said of McKellar after the game. "When he plays well, we play well. If he's off, we're all off."
Senior sharp shooter Sam Purdy also racked up 15 points, primarily via the 3-point shot. He and McKellar hit three baskets a piece from beyond the arc.
Palm Harbor had the game in hand from the start. They jumped out to a ten-point, 18-8 lead after the first which climbed to 34-19 by halftime.
After opening the third quarter on an 8-0 run to go up by 23 points, the game was all but over from there.
The Ravens (4-8) got quality nights out of Eddie Taylor (18 points), A.J. York (16 points) and Demonte McAllister (12 points), but received little scoring help from elsewhere.
Palm Harbor will be participating in one more holiday tournament on Jan. 3 – hosted by Alonso – before heading back to class.
