DUNEDIN, Fla. - DUNEDIN, Fla. - An 11-year-old Dunedin boy was seriously injured Friday night when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing Patricia Avenue.
Pinellas deputies are now trying to find the driver of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run incident, which took place shortly before 11 p.m., Dec. 21, near Patricia Avenue's intersection with Beltrees Street.
Deputies say Travis Craig was struck as he attempted to cross Patricia Avenue on a skateboard. Witnesses told deputies that the driver of the SUV fled the scene without stopping or slowing down, said Sgt. Jim Bordner, a spokesman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
According to deputies, Travis was struck as he and a 13-year-old friend were returning home from a nearby bowling alley. Deputies say the older boy had already crossed the street from east to west and Travis was on a skateboard in the crosswalk following him when he was struck.
Deputies also say that the area is not well lit and that the victim was wearing dark clothing.
Travis sustained serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, the Sheriff's Office says. He was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa where he was admitted for treatment.
The suspect vehicle was described only as a dark color SUV. Investigators believe the vehicle will have front-end damage sustained in the crash.
The investigation continues, the sheriff's spokesman said.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved in this crash is asked to call Cpl. Jim Piper of the Sheriff's Office Major Accident Investigation Team at 727-582-6200. To remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS.
