Overpopulation and resource depletion pose serious threats to peace. Interestingly, this was a conclusion of an important report approved by President Gerald Ford in 1974.
The "National Security Study Memorandum 200" was mysteriously marked "classified" and deep-sixed until almost the eve of the 1994 United Nations population conference in Cairo. "NSSM 200," which few people seem to know about, showed that overpopulation causes political instability and leads to violence, such as the genocide in Rwanda.
The report recommended immediate steps to make family planning information and wherewithal universally available.
Unfortunately, though the report was approved by a Republican president, the Reagan and Bush I and II administrations not only did nothing about it, but they did all they could to see that absolutely nothing got done.
