TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - As the new Tarpon Springs Elementary School takes shape, school staff and students are looking for members of the community to chip in with a brick or two.
No, this isn't an invitation to some modern equivalent of a barn-raising or anything like that. Construction on the new school is coming along just fine.
These bricks are commemorative pavers. They are being sold to raise money for tables and umbrellas for an outdoor reading garden in the school's atrium area.
This atrium is just one of many features that has staff and administrators excited about the new Tarpon Springs Elementary School. It is being built on the same site as the old school, 525 Disston Ave., and is slated to open at the start of the 2008-09 school year.
In the meantime, classes are being held across town, in portable classrooms next to Tarpon Springs Middle School, on North Florida Avenue.
They are hoping members of the community will want to be a permanent part of this facility where generations to come will start on their educational paths. The brick pavers will be placed in prominent locations, including around the main flagpole, the atrium area near the cafeteria and at every building entrance.
Each paver will carry an inscription of up to three lines, with up to 12 characters per line.
The prices for a paver are $50 for businesses or community members, $40 for alumni and $30 for current Tarpon Springs Elementary School students and their families.
The deadline to order a paver is Feb. 14.
