DUNEDIN, Fla. - DUNEDIN, Fla. - In its second season, the Broadway Art Project in Douglas Village has been redesigned to resemble similar street parties in cities like Safety Harbor and Gulfport.
The Art Project offers a free outdoor venue to aspiring artists to display their creations.
This year's event, designed to attract shoppers along Broadway, has been scaled back from each weekend to once a month, Matt Maloy, event organizer said.
From now until April, the exhibition of works by emerging and aspiring artists will be held the first Saturday afternoon of each month. This streamlined calendar will make it easier to schedule artists who set up their creations at the courtyard fountain or under the tent on Broadway, Maloy said.
This past month there was a good turnout of artists ranging from woodworkers to painters and photographers, Maloy said.
The Broadway project gives beginning artists a chance to see how it feels to display their work, before they decide to go professional and devote the time and money necessary to be successful, he said.
It enables artists to get feedback from the public and other artists, he said. Advanced artists and professionals are also invited to display.
The exhibition area will also be open to musicians who want a place to play, he said.
Artists who work in various media, are being sought to display their paintings, sculptures and designs, said Maloy, owner of Vista Galleries of Dunedin, 715 Broadway.
The next exhibition is planned for Jan. 5, from noon until about 4 p.m.
Broadway merchants are always looking for ways to promote their area of downtown, a quaint shopping village in the shadow of Main Street. A recent Wine Walk was very successful in attracting visitors and will become a monthly event, Maloy said.
The next wine walk will be Friday Jan. 18, 5 - 8 p.m. Beginning in February the wine walks will be on the second Friday of each month, at the same time. The event will feature music, wine, food and good times, Maloy said.
