SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - Residents must sign up with the city to be in the know and eligible to receive telephone notifications of emergencies in their neighborhood.
Safety Harbor has initiated its "Code Red" emergency telephone calling service to keep residents informed during emergencies, said Brad Purdy, the city public communications manager.
The system uses an Internet mapping system that geographically targets neighborhoods and sends out a computerized call. A message can range from notification to boil water in case of a broken pipe to information about fires or hurricanes.
One of the advantages of Code Red is that it allows the notification to be sent to both home and mobile phones, said Deputy Fire Chief Joe Accetta.
The system, according to Accetta, can quickly target and notify affected residents. Safety Harbor Fire Department personnel can activate the system from any computer, he said.
Residents interested in receiving the service must register their telephone number with the Fire Department by visiting its www.cityofsafetyharbor.com/index.asp?nid=45> Web site and clicking on the Code Red button.
