SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - A recently acquired $28,000 Florida Fish And Wildlife Conservation Commission grant will help defray some of the city's cost to reconstruct the City Marina boat ramp.
William Baker, city engineer, said he applied for the grant in April to offset a portion of the cost to rebuild the ramp at the same time the city decided to refurbish the marina.
The grant will cut the cost of the new boat ramp in half, with the city having to pay only $28,000, he said.
There are some minor strings attached that the city will be happy to comply with, the engineer noted.
The city has to promise not to sell
the marina until 2029. Since it wants to keep it in perpetuity that should not
be a problem, he said.
The city will also be happy to erect a sign noting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission grant helped pay for a portion of the improvement.
The ramp should be completed by February 2008, as part of a larger marina restoration effort to spruce up the prized bayfront city facility.
Earlier this year, St. Petersburg-based Seaway Marine Contractors was awarded a contract to replace marina decking, pilings, tie poles and stringers, ladders, cleats and other items for $254,000, which is $36,000 less than originally estimated.
